The Sicilian markets

Based on an ancient tradition, the Sicilian markets represent an unmissable opportunity to immerse yourself in a lively atmosphere, rich in scents and colors. It was during the Islamic period that the city experienced a real participation in the meeting and the exchange point in the lively markets, the “suks”, reaching notoriety and fame throughout the Mediterranean basin.

The markets extend into the historic center, and evoke a past closely linked to the present. Among the glittering marble slabs affixed to the walls, it is easy to notice a re-enactment of the ancient crafts just by looking at the street names: via dei Pannieri, via dei Materassai, via dei Carrettieri. By institution and tradition the Palermo markets are and will remain three: Capo, Vucciria and Ballarò. These are in fact the oldest, even if the growth of the city has scattered neighborhood areas of food and non-food markets almost everywhere.
