The mosaics of the Villa del Casale in Piazza Armerina are considered the most beautiful and best preserved of their kind. They are the result of painstaking work, which has made the famous building located in Piazza Armerina famous all over the world, included in 1997 in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The villa and its owner
The villa dates back to 320-250 AD: it may have been a representative residence, belonging to an exponent of the Roman senatorial aristocracy. According to some scholars, it was built and enlarged on the direct commission of a very high imperial official. The mosaics emerged in an excavation campaign, conducted in the mid-twentieth century: over 3,500 square meters of figurative and geometric mosaic flooring were discovered.

La villa e il suo proprietario
La villa risale al 320-250 d.C.: potrebbe essere stata una dimora di rappresentanza, appartenuta a un esponente dell’artistocrazia senatoria romana. Secondo alcuni studiosi sarebbe stata costruita e ampliata su diretta committenza di un altissimo funzionario imperiale. I mosaici emersero in una campagna di scavo, condotta nella metà del Novecento: si scoprirono oltre 3500 metri quadrati di pavimentazione a mosaico figurativo e in stile geometrico.
