The legend tells us that, after leading her brother Artù to the foot of Etna, Morgana moved to Sicily between Etna and the Strait of Messina, where the sailors do not approach due to the strong storms, and built a palace. crystal.
Also according to the legend, Morgana comes out of the water with a chariot pulled by seven horses and throws three stones into the water, the sea becomes crystal and reflects images of the city.
Thanks to her skills, the Fata Morgana manages to deceive the sailor who, deluded by the movement of the aerial castles, believes he is landing in Messina or Reggio, but in reality is shipwrecked in the arms of the fairy.
The Fata Morgana is nothing more than an optical phenomenon that is often admired in the Strait of Messina and on the island of Favignana due to particular atmospheric conditions.
Looking from Messina towards Calabria, one sees the image of Messina as suspended in the air and, vice versa, looking from Reggio Calabria towards Capo Peloro, one sees in the Reggio Strait.

Guardando da Messina verso la Calabria, si vede come sospesa nell’aria l’immagine di Messina e, viceversa, guardando da Reggio Calabria verso Capo Peloro, si vede nello stretto Reggio.
