Le Terme Achilliane si estendono sotto il livello calpestabile del Duomo e della piazza fino a via Garibaldi. Vi si accede tramite una porta posta sul lato destro della facciata della Cattedrale. Conosciamo il nome del complesso termale, che fu costruito in epoca romana, probabilmente intorno al III sec. d.C., grazie ad un’iscrizione risalente al V sec. d.C. e agli atti del vescovo San Leone, dell’VIII secolo, che ne parlano, ma quale ne sia l’origine è ancora un mistero: alcuni storici presumono derivi dal nome del costruttore, o da una statua dell’eroe greco Achille, che non è giunta fino a noi.
The Achilliane Baths extend below the level of the Duomo and the square up to Via Garibaldi. It is accessed via a door on the right side of the Cathedral facade. We know the name of the spa complex, which was built in Roman times, probably around the third century. d.C., thanks to an inscription dating back to the fifth century. A.D. and to the acts of Bishop San Leone, of the eighth century, which speak of it, but what its origin is still a mystery: some historians assume derives from the name of the builder, or from a statue of the Greek hero Achilles, who It has come down to us.
