Festival of the Swordfish in Pozzillo
Sagra del Pesce spada a Pozzillo
Traditional Swordfish Festival in Pozzillo, a seaside hamlet of Acireale (CT). During the event, which takes place on the last weekend of July, it is possible to taste the excellent swordfish sandwich, a local specialty, a very special sandwich with a slice of fresh grilled swordfish with pozzillese salmoriglio, or a oil emulsion, lemon drops and oregano. The swordfish festival, very characteristic and well-known, is very crowded at every edition, attracting numerous visitors from all the centers of the district.
The Borgo, surrounded by citrus gardens, is located on the shore of the Ionian sea and is about 6 km from Acireale. Its name derives from the Sicilian “Pizziddu” which means small tip or small head on the sea. The town was built around the old church, already existing in the sixteenth century, which stood right on the pizziddu and of which today no trace remains, having been demolished in the 70s. The current cult building of the nineteenth century is located in the center of the village, and is dedicated to Santa Margherita. The Pozzillo cliff between the Fontanelle bay and the Cale is characterized by a continuous alternation of small bays and small peaks, among which dominates that of the “marine ox” with the characteristic silhouette in the shape of a crouching cagnolone.
The previous weekend, on the occasion of the patron saint Santa Margherita, the “Sagra del Polpo” takes place. In Piazza S. Margherita Regina tasting stand, where octopus salads are served accompanied by good wine and music.
Il Borgo, circondato da giardini d’agrumi, si trova sulla riva del mare Ionio e dista circa 6 km da Acireale. Il suo nome deriva dal siciliano “Pizziddu” che significa piccola punta o piccolo capo sul mare. Il paese è sorto attorno alla vecchia chiesa, già esistente nel Cinquecento, che sorgeva proprio sul pizziddu e di cui oggi non resta traccia, essendo stata abbattuta negli anni ’70. L’attuale edificio di culto del XIX secolo è sito nel centro del paese, ed è dedicato a Santa Margherita. La scogliera di Pozzillo tra la baia delle Fontanelle e le Cale è caratterizzata da un continuo alternarsi di piccole baie e piccole punte tra le quali domina quella del “bue marino” dalla caratterisica sagoma a forma di cagnolone accucciato.
Il fine settimana precedente, in occasione della festa della patrona Santa Margherita, si svolge la “Sagra del Polpo”. In piazza S. Margherita Regina stand di degustazione, dove vengono servite insalate di polpo accompagnate da buon vino e musica.
