Isola delle correnti
L’isola delle Correnti è una piccola isola tondeggiante della Sicilia, sulla costa ionica, situata nel territorio del comune di Portopalo, estesa per circa 10 000 m² con un’altezza massima di 4 m sul livello del mare.
The island of the Correnti is a small round island of Sicily, on the Ionian coast, located in the municipality of Portopalo, extending for about 10 000 m² with a maximum height of 4 m above sea level.
It is connected to the mainland by an artificial arm, destroyed several times by the waves of the sea. When the low tide transforms the island into a peninsula, it represents the southernmost tip of the Sicilian island, geographically further south of Tunis and further north of Hammamet.
On the islet stands a lighthouse, where decades ago housed the farista with his family, rectangular, with a large square in front. The lighthouse is also decaying, having been in disuse for years.
On the islet little flora grows, but there are plenty of wild leek plants, capers and other shrubs typical of the Mediterranean.
Since 1987 the island has been included in the regulator of parks and nature reserves.
Il faro, Castello Fortezza
È collegata alla terraferma tramite un braccio artificiale, distrutto varie volte dalle onde del mare. Quando la bassa marea trasforma l’isola in una penisola, essa rappresenta l’estremo meridionale dell’isola siciliana, geograficamente più a sud di Tunisi e più a nord di Hammamet.
Sull’isoletta si erge un faro, dove decenni fa alloggiava il farista con la sua famiglia, di forma rettangolare, con davanti un ampio piazzale. Il faro è anch’esso in fase di decadimento, essendo da anni in disuso.
Sull’isolotto cresce poca flora, ma vi abbondano piantine di porro selvatico, capperi e altri arbusti tipici della macchia mediterranea.
Dal 1987 l’isoletta è stata inclusa nel piano regolatore dei parchi e riserve naturali.
